SBCA Provides Substitution Chart for June 1 SP #2 2×4 Design Values

The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) Board of Governors will be issuing a revised Supplement #9 to include SP No. 2 Dense based on the March 9th ruling of the ALSC Board of Review (the first pdf link below is the document currently on SPIB’s website, the second pdf link is an updated Supplement #9 provided by the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA)).
From SBCA’s point of view, the changes contained in Supplement #9 can be implemented in the following ways:
- Everyone can use the current Southern Pine (SP) design values in all designs at the present time per the ALSC January 11, 2012 ruling and the SPIB Supplement #9.
- On June 1, 2012 all load-carrying member designs should utilize the new SP No. 2 design values for all structural end use applications.
- Each company should evaluate their use of Southern Pine No. 2 plan out their individual company’s transition to the new SP No. 2 design values between now and the June 1, 2012 effective date.
A common question raised in the marketplace has been, “How can I get similar load-carrying capacities as before?” One option is to specify a larger size and/or higher grade of visually graded SP lumber.

This chart was created to help buyers and suppliers ascertain the lumber design values that are direct substitutes for visual and MSR/MEL grades using all species groups for 2×4 lumber.
